Deephorizon is based on images from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Areal images of the oil spill (helicopters, airplanes, satellites) are manipulated and then mapped onto a sphere as a relief map. The darker parts are valleys and the brighter parts of the images become elevations hence creating a 3D structure on top of the sphere. A tracking shot moves slowly around this beautiful world comprised of these images of death, pain and destruction. The final product is distorted by a glitch (Version 1: The sweet score elevates this tension between highly aestheticized images and sound and the horrible occurrence out in the gulf of Mexico. It is a dynamic oil painting on a 80.000 square miles ocean canvas with 800 million liters of oil – a unique piece of art representing the “Verkuenstlichung” of nature and the “Vernatuerlichung” of art.
